What did Stephens see, when he peeped through the hole of the cell of Evans, after leaving McLeery at the main gate of the prison?

Stephens thought of looking at Evans once again after leaving Mr. McLeery at the main gate. He peeped through the hole and saw a terrible sight. A man was sitting on Evans' chair and blood was dripping from his head. He had the blanket dropped around his shoulders. His hair were smeared with blood. Blood had reached his clerical collars. It was a terrible sight.
